The makers of an over-the-counter arthritis drug are launching the trial, which could give the hope that it might help relieve pain from arthritis in a way it was not previously known to.
The drug maker, which has been struggling to get new products to market since it announced a "new and improved" list of arthritis drugs last week, will be able to produce the arthritis drugs for patients with mild to moderate arthritis.
The drugs, including Celebrex and Vioxx, are the first to come off the market because of their risks.
Patients with mild to moderate arthritis need only take the drug in order to help relieve pain.
But Celebrex, which works by blocking the production of chemicals in the body that causes inflammation, also could help relieve pain and help reduce stiffness and pain from arthritis.
Vioxx, the first new arthritis drug to be launched in the U. S. in nearly two decades, is an arthritis drug that has been in use for more than 20 years.
The drug's maker, Merck & Co., announced in July that it was about to launch the arthritis drugs to patients with mild to moderate arthritis, after it announced the drug was being developed for it.
The drugs, which are currently only available through prescription, are arthritis pain relievers and anti-inflammatories, and are in the U. market.
Dr. Rachal Gopal, the head of the company's arthritis division, said the trial "will allow patients to see how it helps with their pain and how it may reduce the need for further pain relief," though he declined to speculate what the findings would do to the company's R& D budget.
The new trials, which will be announced in early December, will not mean that the drugs will lose patent protection in the U. market, he said. The FDA does not approve new drugs for other countries, he said.
But Celebrex is a widely used arthritis drug that has been on the market since the 1960s, and has received more than $1 billion in U. FDA approval for it since its launch.
The trial, which began last week in the United States, has been plagued with many problems, including not enough trials, and there has been no FDA approval of the drug in any other country.
Celebrex, for example, will be available only through a prescription.
In a statement to Bloomberg, Merck said it had not received any reports of patient deaths, including one in the U. S., in the last few months of the trial. "We are continuing to monitor for any new clinical data, including those of patients with severe pain, with any new treatments that we may be conducting," the company said.
It also said it was "in the early stages of evaluating the possibility of using this drug to treat patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as patients with chronic pain and/or other conditions related to osteoarthritis."
The trial is expected to start in December, but it does not have a long-term plan for patient care and could be a long-term option for patients.
The company said its products, called Arthritis Pain and arthritis drugs, will be available in the U. for about one-half to two-thirds of the arthritis patients it will treat. It is not yet known how many of the arthritis patients will be taking the drug, but it is expected to be available by the end of the year.
The FDA will allow the trials to be continued.
The FDA is expected to approve Celebrex, Vioxx, and the new arthritis drugs next year.
The companies are also expected to offer the drugs to patients at a reduced cost to the U.
